Comic Report: My First Justice League Comic

Haven’t done one of these in a while.

For my birthday one year I got one of those three-packs of older comics. This was a good way pre-comic store of getting back issues as there were leftovers from store shelves (in this case grocery stores or pharmacies) and being exposed to a random story. Now I’ve already reviewed one of those comics on my other site, Batman #307 reprinted as part of the “Retroactivity” specials, which helped defined how I view Batman, not as some vigilante fighting nut jobs (although the story does feature a psychologically disturbed villain) but as a detective who will help even come to the aid of the homeless. He can be spooky but also compassionate. It also features my favorite Batman moment of all time.

Hollywood has yet to capture the true awesomeness that is the Batcape!

Which is immediately followed by the guy just going back to sleep. At some point I may go back to this comic and do a more thorough analysis over at the Spotlight. But my favorite DC hero has always been Superman. The second comic in the pack was not a Superman comic and the third was a Spider-Man comic that made no sense to me and proves that Snell’s (of Slay Monstrobot of the Deep) theory that any comic can be someone’s first has the occasional exception. (Although in its defense sometimes you have no choice for the sake of the story arc. It’s the risk you take.) Then again, I wasn’t as much into the Spider-Man cartoon as I was Super Friends.

The last one, and man this is a long intro for the front page, was an issue of Justice League of America. Like the Batman comic it was a Whitman comics reprinting and someday I need to look up why that happened. Still, it’s a story I enjoy.

Cleaning under my desk

It’s a crying shame when “temporary” takes years to find a permanent home. Take this bunch of stuff just underneath my desk. Some of this junk has been under there for years. You may notice leftover bits of our favorite cardboard box. There’s technically enough room for my feet to go under there, but I keep kicking stuff and I’ve been used to keeping one foot outside of the under the desk. It’s time to change this.

That’s a start.

Toy Report: Bionicle Gali Nuva

Hello, 2014

Over at my other site I reviewed a Bionicle comic. It…was kind of lacking. However, it did convince me to review the one Bionicle figure I own. In case you didn’t read the article I linked to, Bionicle was one LEGO’s ventures beyond the classic building blocks and into one of action figures. (You may be more aware of their spiritual successor, the “Hero Factory” line, only they’re full robots.) In this case it takes place on the island of Mata Nui, most likely not on Earth. Wikipedia claims the world was called Aqua Magna. The people of Mata Nui were bio-organic in nature and seem to have developed a culture around both the various lands and climates their tribes lived in as well as a shared culture involving wearing masks. The various tribes also shared the legend of the Toa, mighty warriors who would return to protect the island from evil.

After defeating their first threat, a new foe appeared as the toyline expanded. During the course of these events, the Toa gain new powers and become Toa Nuvi…basically the same figures but with extra armor. This is when I bought one to experiment. Having seen the stories on the now gone website, the one that most interested me was the lone female, Gali, whose element was water. Although I can’t swim I do love the water (yeah, figure that one out) and blue happens to be my favorite color. Plus maybe I wanted to support the female in the boys toyline.
