The Software Organizing Project part 2

This is turning out to be a more involved project that anticipated and at this point I’m only doing it to myself. I think it’s because unlike the comic organizing mega-project I can go through and get this finished without dedicating my life to it and move on to something new. It may also be one of those projects that’s a long time coming. Even doing this a few pieces of software are still missing, although I did find a few productivity and art programs. Still don’t know what happened to Sonic Heroes.

If you recall from last week I was trying to figure out how to store my software. I just realized as I was writing this sentence that I have more than two categories. I have the games, the drivers, the art software, the productivity software, and a few “interactive cybercomics”, which means I have to figure out what to do with all of that. Right now though I’m focusing on the games. Here’s my current progress.

Quick Report: Cleaning A Different Corner

The corner near my Atari, VCR, and cable box was a bit cluttered but not as bad as other areas I needed to fix so I didn’t do much with it. However, I needed access to that corner to change the cable box (long story) and had to move the junk out of the way. You see where that ended up, and that did need to get cleaned up. So I took the opportunity to clean that up a bit rather than put all the junk back there and along the heater. That old computer will be dealt with when a friend of mine has time to look at it.

The tripod is there because I needed to judge the distance between the white drawers (where I have comics from that long-running project) and the cabinet where some of my games are. I didn’t want to lose access but I was hoping I could move it over and away from the heater. I don’t think there’s a fire hazard, I just thought it would be better not under the air conditioner. The tripod held up the door and…there isn’t enough clearance. So it has to stay where it is. I did manage to find a difference place for a ceiling fan we haven’t had the chance to use, move the Mini-Cons that were sitting on the floor where the clutter in the picture is, and at least got my photo studio case away from the heat. I also moved a box I don’t need anymore because I know I’m not sending what was in it back, but I might want to use it to send something in the future. I haven’t decided just yet but those go elsewhere anyway. The end result:

I can get to my windows again and it’s a lot cleaner. (This is before I moved the Mini-Cons.) I also have a better place to put the heater when Winter is over. (We seriously need new windows.) This opened up the floor space a bit more but I still need a new place to put those Transformers comics, which I can’t put in the closet currently. But I left it in better shape than it was when I had to move the stuff to reach the cable box, so I achieved that this week.

The Art Corner Clean-Up: Second Strike

Update on this phase. Due to things happening during the week I didn’t get to devote as much attention as I planned to this part of the project, the one where I went over all the card backs with Transformers tech specs and other profiles, but I did go over them. I did send some stuff to recycling bin while still keeping stuff for a future art project that I still think I need. With that I moved on to the next part of art corner clean-up.

With the keyboard shelf now cleaned out of junk it was time to look at the middle shelf. (The bottom shelf will have to wait until I’ve continued my comic project and hopefully cleared up space for the comics sitting there to go where they belong.) This shelf has collected a bunch of various things. Primarily it’s where I have artwork that won’t fit in my huge art binder because of the paper size. See, most of the art was done on 8X11 paper because that’s what I used for years. It’s what goes into copiers or computer printers and that’s what was available. When I switched to Bristol Boards the smallest I could find was 9X12, and I can’t find binder sleeves that hold 9X12. This includes not only lineart for the comics I make but work on title cards for videos and other things I’ve worked on. Throw in a few magazines and it’s become something of a disaster. So this week the goal was to make this look less terrible.

The Art Corner Clean-Up: First Strike

If you’ve been here long enough you may remember my art corner, the spot I set up to my physical and digital drawing. While not too bad in comparison I just had the urge to clean this spot up a bit. The problem is I had a party to go to this week and thus didn’t have much time to do a big project. That’s on the top shelf there. The bottom shelf are Transformers comics from the IDW run that I don’t have a box for, the box containing my other Transformers comics already full from other companies runs. I like Transformers, obviously.

I didn’t even really complete this project; it would be more accurate to say I moved the clutter somewhere else, but I do a little cleaning and I’ll be finishing this project hopefully over the week. So what’s involved with it?

Christmas Decoration Overload

The amount of Christmas decorations I have are fine; just enough to make the studio room festive. For the whole house however, we had way too many Christmas decorations. We had decorations we hadn’t put up in years even before my mom got sick and a few we never put out at all. Now that she’s gone and he’s gotten older he doesn’t want to put out all those decorations, just a small tree and a few things to make it look like Christmas. So this week my Dad and I went through the decorations and lightened our load.

The pictures you’ll be seeing in this week’s report is not from that project. I didn’t take any. The dishes project was a rarity. Usually when I help my dad out I don’t take pictures because he doesn’t really care about the blog so much as getting it done. Instead, to break the text wall, I’ll be using images of my own Christmas decorations for the benefit of your eyes.

Doing The Dishes…Cabinet

This week’s project is dusting and that’s hardly interesting. However, I did so something with my dad last week while filing the book report. We used to have parties and people coming over. We weren’t party central or anything but we did celebrated birthdays and some other holidays. If not here, then we went other places and some of this week’s clutter would be used for that. Or would have been if most of what was up there was anything we used.

You know how you get plates as presents for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or Christmas that you don’t use? We had a big collection of that. Some plates were also bought thinking we’d use them and maybe we did for some gathering but there were more plates than three people, sadly now two, would ever dirty even on Thanksgiving. So last week we decided it was time to start making room in the cabinets.

Quick Report: Updating My Media Library part 2

Recently in my virtual clutter projects I talked about organizing the media library of this website, so I could more easily find a photo that would work in a current article that I used in a past one. Well, I run another website, the one I occasionally borrow media reviews from. This one usually updates every day, barring life issues, instead of weekly and has been running for a lot longer. So there are a lot more images on that site to go over. This collection of files on the site is referred to as a media library, so don’t confuse it with me doing things with my videos or comics or something. Since this week included buttoning up and disconnected my air conditioners as the weather in Connecticut gets colder I decided this would be an easy project.

“Easy” does not mean quick. In the time I had, with a few extra hours taken from the day before, I only managed to get up to 2010. That includes the first two months of 2008 the site was running and all of 2009. This being 2018 and not counting the large amount of time off took in 2016 or when I had a service called Zemanta (later named Sovrn) that I could use for images (the service no longer exists and I don’t know where to find a replacement service for images and external site links connected to a topic, which also hurts this site), there is still a whole lot of work. Comic reviews, images used in articles, logos…it all has to be gone through. As I get closer to modern-day there will be more images with searchable descriptions I can use to find what I want (I’ve gotten better at that recently) but I have to put those descriptions on years worth of pictures.

If I was able to do two months a day I could do a year a week, but considering I failed to do something similar with the emails I will be happily surprised if I pull that off. I found images I didn’t remember I had and images I knew I had but would never come up because they weren’t titled or described right. With this problem solved things will run smoother, as hopefully they will with the site you’re currently reading which I also organized. I’ve still got time to go through the physical clutter before I decorate for Christmas, a time where other projects will dominate. I may return to the virtual clutter then when I don’t have other projects to do first. But the image organizing has to be done. It’s one of those projects I put off for too long. Add to the list I guess. This one is more “professional” than other clutter projects but it’s still clutter and fighting clutter is what this site is about. So onward I press.

Organizing The Cables

Some time ago I went and organized the drawer I keep various cords and other things for my computer or TV/VCR setups. (Twice as you can see from the links.) Over time it got a bit disorganized (as things do), but it was because I was trying to find something specific and had to dig around to find it. This week I decided to try to get it back in shape. Plus I wanted to get rid of that box you see in the corner since it’s hard to go through as well. Baggies were the answer to my problem. (It’s usually baggies or cardboard with me, isn’t it?)

I Collect Some Odd Stuff

If you’ve read enough of this site you know I’m a toy collector, or was when I had money coming in. I never saved the boxes but when there were bio cards on the back (for many of you former kids out there think GI Joe or Transformers) I did save the backs. Or if that’s where the instructions were I’d save that. This doesn’t seem like as good an idea as before. Now they’re just taking up space. In fact here’s the box they’re taking up, along with collected trades of Transformers comic stories from the UK and a couple of UK Transformers comic magazines I’ve managed to acquire. While looking through this box out of boredom I came across a few things that made want to dig through. I’ll get to what later. Let’s just look at the pile.

Quick Project: Taking Down The Warehouse

Another week with friends coming over, but more importantly where I had this Block City made “set” was blocking the air conditioner, and yesterday it just got too hot in my attic. So all I had a chance to do is take down the backdrop, which I want to rethink anyway. I’m hoping to do another big project, and I do have a few I need to revisit and some left on that board. You know…

I still need to clean out my emails, organize my computer files, and do something with the larger graphic novels, collected comics, magazines, and whatever else. Hopefully I can tackle one of these next week. Besides, I haven’t had a decent article for this site in a few weeks and you readers deserve something worth being subscribed to and I started this project for a reason. While I’m still in a better state than I was when I started this project there’s still more to go.
