The Clutter Between Rooms

I have this area between my bedroom and the in-progress studio that’s become a bit of a storage mess. It doesn’t help that there is a slight leak near the chimney that shows up during really heavy rain but that has little to do with this project. That’s why the bucket’s there. We have electric heat anyway. The thing is it’s rather ugly to look at, so this week I decided to tackle this area and make it actually useful. Useful for what?

When I get to (I’m hoping with the next phase) complete the comic organizing mega-project (which is not the same as the collection culling super mega project, which I also have for my Transformers) I want to try again to put the comics in the closet in my room. My hope is that the comics will all be in the same place by the time this is done, including the mini-comics, a few of which I reviewed here with a crosspost from BW Media Spotlight, my primary multimedia review site that I’m also using to go through all my old comics. Anyway, the bit problem is that when I have the longboxes for the comics in the closet I have no place to put my shoes that aren’t in the way. I don’t have that many shoes: sneakers, a pair of back-up sneakers I thought I’d use around the house but I’ve gravitated to sandals around the house, snowboots, and my comfortable dress shoes I also use at conventions because they’re better on my ankles than the sneakers in that situation, as well as my alternate slippers when the others are in the wash.

Well, thanks to the clutter cleaning elsewhere I now have room to put the shoes in this cubby hole since I have room to put other things. Yes, when you get rid of clutter in one spot it opens a place for you to store clutter you’ll actually use and increases your ability to store stuff without getting in your way. So let’s do some more of that!

Quick Report: Still More Reading

No, it’s not a repost. This was a crazy week, and not in the good way by a long shot. One of the victims was my plan to read through one of the remaining newsletters every day. So I ended up reading them yesterday…which was a nice diversion from the funk the week put me into. I’m hoping to do a Transformer review for next week, but that depends on the next crisis.

Quick Project: More Reading

During my forced hiatus a number of papers, from newsletters to conventions to a magazine someone bought for me and some newspaper articles someone else gave me, went unread, and it kind of piled up. There’s still something of a pile left, but I read through a bunch of them. I’m going to commit myself (hopefully) to reading one of the remaining newsletters and articles and other pamphlets a day until I get to the longer reads, and then adjust my schedule accordingly.

With luck I’ll have this pile all done by the end of November and can toss out whatever I don’t need anymore. If some newsletter or something comes my way that will be the daily read, which will delay things by a day, but who says I can’t read two? I need to open time to create and to clean. I still want to do the next phase big comic organizing project, which should be re-integration, possibly in January depending on what my schedule has become. There is still a lot to do but I’m making progress. With any luck by the end of 2018 I’ll have a good handle on this project again.

I’m not counting on it, mind you. šŸ˜€

More Dusting, More Organizing

I had to finish up the dusting I didn’t finish two weeks ago, and that included the dresser. Dusting the dresser is my opportunity to reorganize the darn thing. This image is from the last time I dusted the dresser, which was a long time ago. For some reason this always gets messy even when I declutter until I dust. I put a few things in different spots and it’s a better looking dresser top.

But reorganizing the dresser top got me thinking about the top of my computer desk as well. The little Iron Man figures (which I’ve reviewed) keep falling over even though they’re on little stands, and you can’t tell in this picture but the Donatellos were getting in the way of setting things back up. Also, Scooter’s knees are weak and he has a tendency to fall on his back. So I kept the Silver Centurion Iron Man (although not the cards or even the stands) and put the rest away with the Donatellos. Right now it’s just Silver Centurion, Super Clown, the ships, the Digimon, and VINcent fromĀ The Black Hole, and it looks much better. I want to get in the habit of rotating the displays, maybe just leaving the spaceships and changing everything else around whenever I dust, so it looks different every time and adds some variety.

I may do some more spot-cleaning projects before the next Transformers review set. It all depends on what time allows.

Quick Project: Shredding Day!

You can just barely see in the corner of the picture a cardboard box. Until yesterday this was part of my cleaning process. I had amassed a lot of bills and junk mail and after one of the cleaning project I put stuff in there to be shredded. And promptly forgot to bring them downstairs to be shredded. Over time it kind of piled up and while I was willing to bring a little down at a time, my dad said I should bring the whole thing down so we could go over it. This “quick” project took all afternoon.

However, that’s one pile of papers tossed out or shredded. Now the goal is to not let the pile get that high again. I should read the mail downstairs when I get it and toss out or shred where appropriate rather than bringing it upstairs to read later and never getting around to it. And that’s what I intend to do. I don’t want a pile like this again. Now I just have all of that other reading to do, and other projects to handle. Does this project ever end?

Am I making my point?

My two big clutter projects are comics and Transformers. And that’s on top of other project, life, and various other issues. (No pun intended.) But my Transformers are at least organized. Comics are all over the place and rather a mess. I’m pretty sure this is the third attempt at organizing them and it STILL won’t be completed. I’ve been doing it in phases, trying to get some control while knowing this isn’t the end. It’s also a constantly running project, as readers of my other site, BW Media Spotlight, are well aware with my daily reviews of old comics as I decide whether or not to keep them. I have a pile of comics I’m ready to part with, but it’s a small pile. I’m also not even a quarter of the way through and there are comics I’ve reviewed before this project that I still need to re-read to decide if they should stay on top of the ones I haven’t reviewed as articles on my site. It’s daunting, especially considering I’m still four months+ out from a second major surgery and it took six to get over the first one plus a major infection. So don’t be surprised if this is far from done.

On my side is my stubborn streak and desire to get some control over my multiple collections that are so big I can’t enjoy them. So I finally get a week I can devote to this project and I’m going to use it. So what are we doing in this phase?

Quick Re-Projects

Old picture. It’s what I had of the spot.

With my re-connection surgery looming I wanted to get a few more quick projects out of my hair. I’ve been told this is outpatient (although if I have to at least stay overnight I won’t be surprised) but I don’t know how long the recovery will be. I’m hopeful it will be shorter since I’m in better condition than I was the first time. But we aren’t here to discuss my colon, we’re talking clutter.

I had a few smaller projects I wanted to do and I had time to do more than one. I could have spent that on a larger project but I don’t want to get caught in something that will take more time than I have and really one project just kind of led to another. They’re five short project that I need to get done, but they’re also “re-visits” of previous projects that I either didn’t get a chance to finish, needed a slight “refresh”, or just needed to be done.

“I Can’t Find My Shirt!”

closet 001

That’s what happened this week. Actually, I want to find a dark-colored short-sleeved shirt for my Dad, who was attending a wake earlier this week. But I had shirts all in the wrong spot, another victim of my state of mind this year, being too sick, in pain, or weak to really care where anything went. So this week’s project was to get this into a better shape.

Quick Project: Moving The Switch Box

switch box 1

I had a distracting week due to things that took priority, so I only had time for one quick project. Pardon how dark the picture are, as they are in a dark corner of the studio.

I have a switch box (I’m not sure what the official term is at the moment) that allows me to go between TV, VCR (where the Atari 800 is hooked up to), NES, and CD-I depending on what I want to watch or play. During anĀ earlier project I found the wires were so messed up (as TV wires tend to get) that I decided to move the thing to an easier to get to location, and then that got stalled. You can see it in the allegedly temporary spot so I could get to the back of the box and test things out. Then I didn’t have a chance to put it in a better spot. This week’s mini-project was to finally fix that.
